Siya Kolisi set to return to Stormers in 2026 |
Springbok captain Siya Kolisi is officially set to return to the Stormers in 2026—a major homecoming move that could see the two-time Rugby World Cup winner finish his legendary career with the franchise where it all began.
Kolisi is expected to rejoin the Cape Town side in July 2026 on a three-year deal. Although he will be 35 at the time, the Stormers believe his value extends far beyond age, recognising both his on-field competitiveness and his immense leadership influence.
The decision is also deeply personal for Kolisi, who recently finalised a divorce. He has made it clear that being closer to his children—who attend school in Cape Town—is a top priority.
Reports indicate the Springbok skipper will accept a significant pay cut to make the move possible.
“Siya is a national icon who has such a strong connection to our team and our supporters,” said Stormers CEO Johan le Roux. “He is also a family man who wants to be there for his children as much as possible. These are values that resonate with our club.”
The Stormers see Kolisi as a central figure in their long-term “Project 2029”, an ambitious rebuilding initiative focused on nurturing the next generation of elite talent capable of dominating European rugby.
Director of Rugby John Dobson believes Kolisi’s presence will be transformational. “Siya will be able to help develop these players and mentor them in a way that nobody else could,” Dobson said.
Reflecting on his decision, Kolisi emphasised that returning to Cape Town goes far beyond rugby. “My family is in Cape Town, and it is important to me to be close to them. This move gives me the chance to do that while also giving back to the team and fans who made such a big contribution to the player and person I am today.”
Kolisi acknowledged his time at the Sharks as “a special part of my journey,” but said the pull of home—and family—made this full-circle moment the right choice.
His return marks one of the most anticipated comeback stories in South African rugby, bringing leadership, inspiration, and a final chapter rooted in loyalty and legacy.
